Back in March of 2017 I decided I was going to make a video about how I become a DJI affiliate, and how I had received a ton of free items from their affiliate program in return for making videos of their products on YouTube.

I figured I would use one of those eye catching and snazzy subject lines HOW TO GET FREE DRONES not only for it to capture people’s attention, but also that I was being 100% truthful, that it was actually a manner in which to get free items like drones, gimbals, microphones, etc, all from DJI – did I say for FREE?

WHAT DID THE DJI AFFILIATE PROGRAM GIVE ME?

A highlight of things I have received from the affiliate program are the following:

  • DJI SPARK
  • DJI MAVIC PRO
  • DJI TELLO
  • DJI OSMO MOBILE 2
  • DJI OSMO+
  • DJI GOGGLES (SE)
  • DJI PHANTOM 3 STANDARD

As you can imagine, receiving these items for free is a good motivation to keep making videos about DJI products. It also motivates me to continue to help customers deepen their knowledge of these products.

HOW DID I DO ALL OF THIS?

The process is a simple one. You sign up for an account at the u.dji.com website as an affiliate partner. It’s a simple process. Then once that has been done, you look for links on their site to start promoting. At the time, I had a fairly active but not exactly massive YouTube channel, but I did enjoy making a ton of videos reviewing DJI products.

WHAT VIDEOS DID I MAKE?

Those could be simple products for drones like landing pads, or filters, or drones themselves and their functions. A lot of videos were simply to help users better understand their drones or the ability to fly better with broadening knowledge of their drones. These yielded the best results.

THEN WHAT?

So with these videos that I had made in mind, I started to link the DJI affiliate URLs into my descriptions lines of my YouTube videos, and I started to watch the clicks come in by checking the stats on the u.dji.com site on a daily basis. A good day would be perhaps 200 views/clicks on the URLs that I had posted. Bad day, maybe 10.

THEN YOU WAIT AND WATCH…

Interestingly, some days I would get some commission from obvious sales. There is a pending / waiting process where DJI await for the purchase to go through before the customer cancels, but with a few weeks you see credits clear and then the interesting prospect starts to happen – you start to build up credits that you can then use to purchase DJI products.

All of this made me interested in making more videos for DJI, which further impacted my clicks on my posted URLs and thus more credits. And before I knew it, I was ordering things from them for “free.”

It’s a nice feeling to be able to cruise through the DJI.com site and purchase things you could only have dreamed of. Even nicer to get them for free.

TO RECAP

Owning your first drone can be quite a daunting thing. You just want to rip open the box and take it up there, but the truth is just turning on the drone itself can leave some owners frustrated. Some of my most viewed videos are the simplest ones. I also even consult my own videos to help aid my memory when I get rusty with a drone that I haven’t flown for a while.

If anyone out there has a channel on YouTube or a blog or a web presence, and you enjoy electronics like drones from DJI, then joining up for their DJI affiliate program over at u.dji.com is not a bad thing at all. Their generous 5% commission on your sales can allow you to tally up a quick amount of credit that can then build to put towards technology you aspire to own, or perhaps can’t afford with your own cash.

DJI just doesn’t do drones, they do a lot of gizmos like Osmo cameras, microphones and tripods. Also warranty items are a useful way to spend credits too.

Bottom line is, if you have a webspace and you enjoy talking DJI, why not give it a go.
